What is Natural Healing?

Posted Monday, 10 December 2007

Any time you cut yourself, break a bone, or “get sick,” your body/mind’s natural healing system goes into action and mends what needs repair or fights foreign invaders, such as viruses or bacteria.

However, conditions often exist that compromise the body/mind’s healing abilities, which can lead to serious complications or slow healing. Also, even though the body can heal itself, sometimes it needs help in order for complete health to be restored.

Lower back pain, for example, will often responds to complete bed rest, which may be difficult for people to do. Various options exist for dealing with the pain, some natural and some synthetic.

An allopathic physician (M.D.) might prescribe a pharmaceutical pain killer that can alleviate the discomfort. But some people prefer employing alternatives to drugs such as massage, acupuncture, chiropractic care, herbal remedies, energy healing, physical therapy, or a combination of these. They might also agree to losing excess weight and exercising regularly in order to strengthen the back muscles and prevent future problems.

With the increased popularity of natural healing alternatives, a growing number of physicians are coming to see that poor nutrition, energy imbalances, a misaligned spine, and other conditions can contribute to physical and emotional dis-ease and they are beginning to incorporate techniques, often called “alternative,” into their practices. The combination of allopathic and alternative modalities is called integrative or complementary medicine.

A Different Approach to Healing

People who are only familiar with the treatments provided by traditional allopathic physicians often need some reorientation in order to appreciate how natural healing methods work. Instead of a fast acting pill which reduces symptoms, natural healers activate the body’s healing system and give it what it needs in order to mend, including time.

You can take an aspirin or drug to eliminate a headache, but you could also use magnets, energy healing, or herbs to accomplish the same thing. These natural techniques have fewer side effects than drugs and often help eliminate the root cause of the problem.

Our goal on this site is to introduce you to a wide range of natural healing techniques and the practitioners who use them so you can try them for yourself with confidence. You’ll also find many businesses that offer products and services that can help you as you move towards better health—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
