 1. How does Natural Healing differ from Allopathic Medicine
Medical doctors, for the most part are trained to treat disease. Their usual protocol involves giving a specific diagnosis then treating to relieve the symptoms associated with that diagnosis, usually with drugs or surgery.

Natural healing practitioners, on the other hand, tend to treat the whole person—body, mind, and spirit—in order to restore or maintain an overall state of health. These “alternative” practitioners also focus on prevention of dis-ease, and restoration of an internal and external environment that supports health.

If you were to visit an allopathic physician for depression, for example, there is a good chance that the doctor would prescribe an anti-depressant such as Prozac or Zoloft, pharmaceutical drigs that along with relieving depression can cause unpleasant side effects.

For depression, an alternative practitioner would most likely talk to you about what you eat, your relationships, and your lifestyle to see if the cause for the depression can be isolated. Treatments such as acupuncture, homeopathics, energy balancing, or energy psychology techniques including Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), Be Set Free Fast (BSFF), or EMDR often offer effective drugless alternatives for the treatment of depression. For some people, eliminating sugar and/or carbohydrates or other foods that cause “brain allergies” can be the path to depression-free living.

On the other hand, there are techniques used by allopathic physicians that are essential in certain situations. Acute conditions, such as a serious infections, a broken bone, a ruptured appendix, or a detached retina, all need to be treated by methods used by an M.D. or allopathic specialist.

Another difference between the two schools of healing is that alternative practitioners encourage patients to take more responsibility for their own health care. Medical doctors often take the responsibility of deciding what is ailing you and making the final pronouncement as to what course of treatment you need. Alternative practitioners often help you understand your role in maintaining health or developing dis-ease then help you make informed choices about how you wish to be treated.

At NMNaturalHealing.com, we believe that there is a need for many different types of healing modalities and the ideal situation is when all branches of medicine and healing work together for the good of the patient.

If I use natural healing techniques, do I have to stop seeing my doctor?
Absolutely not. Natural healing techniques very often work well with those used by M.D.s. For example, on NMNaturalHealing.com, you’ll find a listing for a plastic surgeon, Daniel Ronel, M.D., who uses homeopathic remedies, such as arnica, before and after procedures because doing so hastens healing and minimizes post-surgical discomfort. When his patients request it, he brings in energy healers to even further facilitate healing.

Russ Canfield, M.D, also listed on this site, has studied nutrition extensively and incorporates nutritional counselling and supplements into his practice. He also has an affinity for electrical, or frequency, medicine and uses various tools, such as micro-current, to facilitate healing.

Many alternative practitioners do not perform blood tests and other diagnostic evaluations. These have to be done and read by a licensed practitioner. People who prefer to stay with alternatives often use an osteopathic physician as their primary practitioner because osteopaths can do diagnostic tests and also know about many alternative treatments. James Baum, D.O., is an example of an osteopathic physician who treats heavy metal poisoning, joint and tendon problems, pain, and general health issues with a wide variety of alternative technique.

The many forms of energy healing complement most medical treatments, including both chronic and acute conditions. Although many people are already familiar with alternatives such as chiropracty and acupuncture, energy healing and electrical or frequency medicine are not as well known. These safe and effective modalities offer great relief and stimulate deep healing. You can learn more about them by using the Find a Practitioner search links and choosing Energy Healing and Balancing or Frequency Medicine from the modalities list.

How can I decide which is the best practitioner, product, or facility for me?
Your body/mind system has an innate wisdom that will draw you to that which you need in order to heal, if that is your intention. There is no right or wrong practitioner or health restoring product, service, or facility that works for everyone. Part of the healing process involves learning to connect to your body/mind’s wisdom and trust it.

That said, there are some very practical steps you can take. If you are totally new to natural and alternative healing methods, browse our directory or our modalities glossary and see if there is a practitioner, modality, or product or service offered by one of the businesses listed on the site that you are drawn to.

Once you zero in on something that appeals to you, you can call or visit the business or call the practitioner and ask whatever questions you need to ask before you make a treatment decision. The people and business listed here all desire to educate the public about the techniques they use and will be happy to answer your questions before you make a final decision.

You might also have an inclination as to what you are looking for. You may, for example, know that you would like to visit a spa or take some yoga lessons. Or maybe you have the feeling that you might benefit from an acupuncture treatment or need to consult a medical intuitive. Trust the feeling and do a modalities or keyword search and evaluate the various results you will get, then see what you are drawn to.

If you make an appointment with a practitioner and upon arrival at the appointment do not feel 100% comfortable, you can opt to change your mind and leave, without it costing you anything.

How do I know if a healer or product can help me?
When a doctor prescribes a pharmaceutical remedy or suggests surgery, he or she is making an informed guess. You are probably well aware that treatments often have to be adjusted to compensate for unpleasant side effects or unwanted results. Unfortunately, many wrong medical judgement calls can have tragic results.

With natural healing methods, the possibility of side effects is greatly reduced or eliminated entirely. If a practitioner suggests a supplement that disagrees with you, you might feel not quite right, but the chances of a tragic consequence are virtually nil.

It is also possible that you might not find a particular treatment or remedy effective. But based on a practitioners experience, there is a good chance that a suggested remedy will work and you will experience relief.

In deciding to try a particular modality, practitioner, product, or service trust your intuition. Read the article Can You Hear Your Inner Voice in our Articles section

How long does it take for me to see results?
There is no simple answer to this question. With a majority of modalities you will notice an immediate effect such as reduction of symptoms, a sense of relaxation, or renewed energy. However, because many of the modalities used by practitioners listed on this site activate the body/mind’s natural healing system, positive results can continue over a long period of time.

When you visit an energy healer, for example, you will most likely have a sense of feeling better immediately. But the effects can work through your system for three months or more. Frequently, you won’t even correlate life improvements to your energy treatment because the effects can be very gradual and more than just your physical health can be affected.

Do I have to believe in energy healing for it to work?
No. But if you have a positive attitude going into a treatment session, the effects will be enhanced. It’s a well-known fact in medical circles that a patient’s attitude has a significant effect on the healing process. The same is true for any kind of natural or alternative therapies.

How can I learn about all the different techniques that are used?
Our Modalities Glossary is filled with hundreds of definitions of various treatment techniques. In addition, our Articles section has many interesting examples of natural healing techniques and how they affect various health conditions.

What if I’m not in New Mexico?
Many of our practitioners offer phone consultations and businesses that offer products ship out of state. Each practitioner listing indicates if phone sessions are available in the blue box on the left side of the listing.
