Homeopathy Then and Now

Did you know that throughout the nineteenth century, scarlet fever was the leading cause of death among infectious childhood maladies with a mortality rate of up to 30 percent? Yet, during this time, homeopaths saw death rates of less than three percent with their patients being treated for scarlet fever.

Untreated “lobar pneumonia” has a mortality rate of 18-30 percent (as of 2005), with the difference in the percentage dependent on the success of antibiotic treatment. In the 19th to 20th century the death rate was considerably higher. Since the 19th century, homeopaths again reported deaths of only one to three percent.

Did you also know that the mortality rate from yellow fever in the 19th century was frequently recorded at between 20 – 70%? Under homeopathic care, death rates in this time period also averaged one to three percent.

Astonishing, right?

Does homeopathy sound like a system of medicine worth trying?

Of course, this century’s health problems are much more complex than the more simple infectious (albeit deadly) diseases of 100 – 200 years ago.

Our chronic and usually complex health problems of today, as well as many infectious agents, remain unsolved mysteries for conventional medicine. This is where, homeopathy, through it’s “law of similars” (like cures like) is again usually quite successful in offering reversal of your chronic health issues.

Anything working on the “law of opposites” (as is the case with conventional medicine, except in rare cases as in vaccines and Ritalin, which is another subject I’ll follow up with in the next newsletter) is only offering palliation through suppression. Palliation means “temporary relief”, often leading to other dangerous effects.   Have you heard about Vioxx, Celebrex, Bextra, Crestor and many others that are under attack or being pulled from the market for their dangerous, sometimes fatal side effects? More than likely, there will be many more to come.

If you are parent, you will know that in recent weeks children’s “over the counter” cold and cough medicines have been determined to be ineffective, and parents are advised by conventional medicine not to use them.   They believe that not only are they ineffective, but they probably prolong the duration of the cold or cough.

Children respond beautifully to homeopathy and it has been used successfully for centuries for all kinds of children’s health problems… not just colds and coughs.    There are many good homeopathic books on the market to help you learn to treat simple acute illnesses for you and your family.

Some of my favorites for these simple acute illnesses are:

1. Homeopathic Medicine for Children and Infants by Dana Ullman

2. The Complete Homeopathy Handbook by Miranda Castro

3. The Complete Homeopathic Resource for Common Illnesses by Dennis Chernin

4. Everybody’s Guide to Homeopathic Medicines by Stephen Cummings and Dana Ullman

If you’ve never used homeopathy before, and would like to see for yourself how successfully it can work, the next time someone experiences an injury causing bruising and swelling, give Arnica 30C or 200C (depending on the severity of the injury) a few times within the first 24-36 hours and see how it speeds up the healing process.   The sooner it is given after an injury, the faster you will see results.

Please seek the help of a qualified homeopath for anything other than a simple acute illness. If not treated properly, you risk suppression, and possible aggravation (worsening of the “dis-ease”).   Treatment with homeopathy is much more complex than conventional medicine, in that it’s secret to success likes in the “wholistic” approach, treating each person individually. There are many possible remedies in homeopathy for every condition, and many possible causes that also need to be considered.

Have fun with your homeopathic experiences! It can often be miraculous, and is truly a gift from God.
