Watsu® comes from a combination of the words 'water' and 'shiatsu'. It refers to elements of massage, joint mobilization, shiatsu, muscle stretching and dance that are carried out in warm water. The deeply relaxing effects of warm water combined with stretches, massage and point work result in a range of therapeutic benefits and potential healing on many levels.

The special feature of the Aqua Therapy Center is a non-chlorinated, sixteen-foot diameter pool surrounded by an attractive Japanese garden. Water is cleaned using an ozonator, rather than chlorine.

Patients, who are often referred to the Center by M.D.s, experience stress and pain reduction, better ability to relax, and greater flexibility. In addition, there are reports of improvements in children with cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, rheumatoid and spinal arthritis, autism, and birth defects.
A study of seniors in a retirement community also noted benefits for patients with arthritis, cancer, joint replacement, and spinal problems.
In many cases, patients have found Watsu more effective than commonly prescribed physical therapy and other therapeutic treatments. When prescribed by a physician, Watsu treatments may by authorized by insurance companies.

Along with the individual treatments the Agua Therapy Center also offers an array of courses from three-hour introductions to 50-hour intensives. In addition, clients can take advantage of warm-water exercise classes and a clinic for those with special needs.

The Center was developed by CEO Marian Phelps, a certified Watsu practitioner and instructor. Marian is also a licensed massage therapist. On staff are four licensed Watsu therapists, two instructors, one doula (experienced non-medical assistant), and a coach.

As a 20 year patient of fibromyalgia and arthritis, it is mentally and emotionally rewarding to be able to just let go and receive. I felt nurtured, safe and trusting. At the beginning of my session my pain level was around 5 out of 10. At the end of the session, I was in the 2 to 3 range. My stiffness is totally gone. I have tremendous sense of well-being. Although I love table massage, Watsu provides a level of relief that is physical, emotional and spiritual that is not available on the table. –Donna Corkran, Santa Fe, NM

I want to let you know what a positive experience the WATSU ONE training was for me. All of the essentials seemed to flow. Marion’s compassion and unwavering encouragement were ultimately what kept me going through the arduous process.   For me the Aqua Therapy Center of Santa Fe, has been a sacred place that has assisted me in beginning a work that I hope will prove therapeutically beneficial to others on many levels through the gracious assistance of the water. --Barbara O’Neill, PT, Albuquerque, NM
